Streetcars were the earliest form of public transportation in Portland, although they were initially run by private companies. The first line opened in 1872 and was run by Ben Holladay's Portland Street Railway Company; the cars were drawn by horses or donkeys. The last of the first-era streetcars ceased operations in the mid 1950s.
