Occupella's Christmas Carol Flash Mob

[improve]

  • Date: Sun Dec 18
  • Time: 2:00pm until 3:00pm
  • Location: To Be Announced, Portland, OR
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Occupella's Christmas Carol Flash Mob Plan

Occupella plan on doing a well-orchestrated, rehearsed, and organized Flash Mob with 50+ committed members.

This would ideally also have the support of
  • Livestream
  • Photographers
  • A videographer to upload onto YouTube
  • Members of the community such as TUPAC (The United Performance Arts Collective)
  • First Unitarian Church Choir group
  • Maryhurst University Choir
  • The GA if possible.
Expectation of the Flash Mob
  • Participants should be willing to commit to the rehearsal date (at least one of the two mentioned) and be able to show up for the 18th at 2:00pm.
  • The carolers will be in a “choir-like” formation, singing to Stephanie Gilfillan’s rendition of “Do You Hear What I Hear?”
  • We are hopefully and planning on doing a basic performance while the carolers are singing, which would include holding up signs with wordings that are in sync with the tune and lyrics while “running” up and down the escalators, circling the group of carolers on the central arena of a ground floor. Ideally, we will have 20+ "escalator runners" and 50+ carolers.
  • It is important that we dress appropriately to not bring attention to yourself and our group so that security do not block us from entering and also to prevent others from suspecting us! Costumes are fine and encourage! We just need to be careful so that it is concealed until the moment we start, when a leading member will signify this with a "Carol Check!" Once the Carol Check is established, we will briskly get into our formation and began the caroling.

After the Flash Mob is done and over with, we will immediately disperse discreetly and attempt to blend in with the crowd. We will then meet up at another location to do a quick creative, peaceful protest, which will be announced at a meeting time in the near future.

This will also require everyone's involvement and presence.

Overall, we hope that the Flash Mob will not take longer than 1 hour.

Convention to Help Craft the Declaration of Occupy Portland

[improve]

  • Date: Sunday, Dec. 18th
  • Time: 6:15pm
  • Location: Mission Theater (1624 Northwest Glisan Street, on Glisan and 17th)
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Occupy Portland cordially invites you to join us in writing the Declaration of Occupy Portland.

All are welcome to attend and participate in the spirit of community and direct democracy.

This will be the first of a series of conventions in which we as a community will do the vital work of declaring to the world who we are, what our values are, what our demands are, and what we’re all about. Come and make your voice heard!

The facebook invite is here: http://www.facebook.com/events/149798141789590/.

Please RSVP on facebook or directly to Owen, owensanders@gmail.com, so we know how many people are coming!
Food and drink will be available at the theater.

A bit of history:

Owen Sanders began the difficult task of writing the declaration and has put his draft – which has received input from the community here: http://thedeclarationofoccupyportland.com.

Currently, he’s open to feedback but is the only editor. He’s now opening that document to full input by the community.

Owen’s Declaration can either serve as a launching pad or it may be scratched to begin anew. It’s up to all those who attend. Direct democracy is a beautiful process with one fatal flaw – it needs your participation to function properly.

Please come out and add your voice to the Declaration of Occupy Portland.

Note:

  • On Dec. 9th, 2011, The Occupy Portland Spokescouncil voted to hold it’s first convention to write the declaration.

Compassionate Communication (aka Nonviolent Communication or NVC) is based on the work of Marshall Rosenberg and the Center for Nonviolent Communication (www.cnvc.org).

The human soul hungers for the deep nourishment of understanding, connection and self-expression. And yet, most of us have been trained from birth to compare, judge, diagnose, lie, abdicate responsibility, blame, compete, control and demand. The domination system has outposts in our heads. Thinking and communicating in the above way is costly and ineffective, as it alienates us from our natural compassion and each other; conditions us into a subtle self-hatred that pervades our culture; has us deny our needs and our power to serve life; re-enforces our powerlessness and victimization; and often leads to misunderstanding, unnecessary conflict, and violence.

Why have we been trained in this way? Because the domination system works when people are kept ignorant, disconnected from our power, divided, at each others throats – compliant producer/consumer debt slaves in times of peace, and obedient cannon fodder in times of war.

Compassionate Communication (NVC) offers an alternative. One in which we can transform the judgment and criticism, the negative self talk, the denial of responsibility, and the attitude of demand that keeps us powerless and separate from yummy connection with others. An alternative in which we can:

♥ Heal the trauma and pain that keeps us stuck
♥ Develop more perspective on what triggers us emotionally, improving skills for responding rather than reacting when in conflict, using conflict to get closer to people
♥ Clarify what’s underneath our negative self-talk, helping us transform it into self-love
♥ Tell our truth in a way that is both compassionate and honest
♥ Increase our ability to build relationships based on compassion and mutual understanding
♥ Reclaim our power to be fully alive and responsible
♥ Create a world where we care for and respect one another, celebrating our differences
♥ Own the beautiful and sacred life energy that animates us.

NVC guides us in reframing how we hear others, how we express ourselves, and how we connect with ourselves. Instead of habitual, automatic reactions, our thinking, listening and speaking becomes firmly based in an awareness of what we are perceiving, feeling, needing and wanting. Using NVC, we focus the light of consciousness in these 4 areas to transform our judgment into compassion, discern our real responsibilities, reveal our humanity, connect our hearts, and celebrate our aliveness.

When this work is taken on sincerely and diligently, it can help us remember the “subtle, sneaky, important reason” we were born a human being – the unique gift to life that each of us is. It can help us connect with the divine energy that is our source. Powerful people can’t be bossed around. We don’t give away our power through compliance.

About me (Upgeya Pew): Having encountered the invisible repression of my own conditioning, and the nature of the culture doing that conditioning, during my involvement with the social movements of the 60’s, I’ve spent the last 40 years learning and freeing myself, and developing my capacity for understanding, awareness and love.

The last decade or so of those years I’ve been learning and teaching Compassionate Communication (NVC), because it’s fun – and the most powerful process I’ve discovered for transforming what I call “domination culture” into “partnership culture”. I’ve attended two 10-day residential intensives in NVC by the Center for Nonviolent Communication and Marshall Rosenberg, the developer of NVC, as well as many other workshops and trainings. My most powerful learning, however, has come by doing – by facilitating NVC trainings and practice groups for the last 10 or so years.

My passion is in creating partnership culture through transformation in consciousness.

Liam: "I recommend this workshop for anyone that plans on speaking with anyone else in the future. Really Good Stuff!"

Purpose

the EfRytIng DRiVe

...a niGht of

1ooO blANKEts!

FREE SHOW

On any given night there are at least 2000 people sleeping on the streets of Downtown Portland. These people have little prospects for bettering their individual situations. High unemployment rates, mental health cuts, and cuts in the social services agency budgets assure that this will be the most populated the sidewalks have been in the history of Portland...

While we are all concerned and sympathetic regarding the situation on our streets, many citizens feel as if they dont know how to help. We are offering a opportunity to make an enormous difference in someones life with minimal impact on your own. All we need is anything that you can bear to part with. If you have ever been cold then you can appreciate what a difference something as simple as a pair of sweatpants can make. Consider the simple joy that a blanket or a warm coat can make... now imagine the healing power of 1000 blankets? That is our goal: to raise as much usable winter wear as we can and to use blankets as our measuring stick.

THIS IS NOT AN EVENT TO GATHER GOODS FOR THE OCCUPATION

The people we are trying to reach are known as the "hidden homeless" because they are not out in view of the public, this demographic is made up largely of complete family units sleeping in cars or shelters.

Should a person involved with the Occupation find himself/herself in need of gear, he/she will have to comply with whatever conditions the Downtown Chapel places on all of the people they serve...

SO... we will use our proven formula

rappers+DJs+cool people +cool business = problems solving

I will bring you a kickass night of hiphop FOR FREE!

And you bring me efryting you got...

Hats, gloves, coats, scarfs, earmuffs, leggings, hoodies, socks, sleeping bags, and of course blankets.

Everything that we raise will be donated to and redistributed by The Downtown Chapel.

This is an excerpt I took from their mission statement:

"Dedicated to serving our neighbors experiencing poverty and homelessness, our parish's Community Programs are dynamic expressions of our faith in action. Whether someone is in need of food, clothing, hygiene, bus tickets, or just a friend, that person is treated with the respect and dignity that they deserve. Our focus on hospitality allows us to focus on each person, rather than just the need of that person, and begin to walk with them towards positive transitions and engagement in community."

Although you are welcome to protest wherever is convenient and oppressive.
