Oregon City is the oldest city in the state, having been founded by John McLoughlin in 1829.
It is located on the east bank of the Willamette River, about 13 miles south (upstream) of Portland. It's the county seat of Clackamas County, and marks the end of the Oregon Trail.
The city has the largest waterfall by volume in the entire Pacific Northwest, Willamette Falls, which made this the navigable upper limit of the river back in the old days, and therefore the logical place to settle. The falls have been completely re-channeled and overbuilt by a century of industrial paper-mill buildings. Unfortunately the mill recently went bankrupt.
