The Portland Thorns FC is a Portland-based women's soccer club within the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). Established in 2012, the team began playing games in 2013.[1] The Thorns is one of 8 teams within the NWSL, in this inaugural year of the league.
The Portland franchise is owned by Merritt Paulson by way of Peregrine Sports LLC, which also owns the MLS team the Portland Timbers, making it the only NWSL team with Major League Soccer affiliation.
