National Day of Action against Wells Fargo!

[improve]

  • Date: Tuesday, January 24, 2012
  • Time: 12:00pm until 2:00pm
  • Location: Standard Insurance Building 900 SW 5th Ave, Portland, OR
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

On November 17th, 9 members of PCASC were arrested for standing in opposition to Wells Fargo's investment in private prisons.

Wells Fargo invests in private prison company's GEO Group and Corrections Corporation of America (CCA). These companies fund the writing & passing of racist and oppressive laws which criminalize communities of color in order to fill their prisons for maximized profit.

On January 24th we return to Wells Fargo to demand the divestment of stock in private prisons. It's a national day of action against Wells Fargo.
Join us along with other community organizations as we stand against Wells Fargo's racist investments.

We'll be meeting at the Standard Insurance Building at 900 SW 5th Ave at 12pm til 2pm.

The National Prison Industry Divestment Campaign is working to expose the profiteering of Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) and the GEO Group, the biggest private prison companies in the US, who are making millions off the separation and incarceration of immigrants and communities of color at the expense of our tax dollars.

We are calling on all prison shareholders to divest from the prison industry.

End the deportations and the raids!
Abolish All Prisons!
Legalization Now!

Purpose

Occupy Portland invites you to Shut Down the Corporations!

Occupy Portland calls for a national day of non-violent direct action to reclaim our voices and challenge our society’s obsession with profit and greed by shutting down the corporations.

We are rejecting a society that does not allow us control of our future.

We will reclaim our ability to shape our world in a democratic, cooperative, just and sustainable direction.

We call on the Occupy Movement and everyone seeking freedom and justice to join us in this day of action.

There has been a theft by the 1% of our democratic ability to shape and form the society in which we live and our society is steered toward the destructive pursuit of consumption, profit and greed at the expense of all else.

By shutting down the corporations for a day we begin to recreate our democracy. We begin to create a society that is organized to meet human needs and sustain life.

Leap into Action on F29!

Occupy Portland called for a national day of action on February 29th to shut down corporations associated with the anti-democratic American Legislative Exchange Council, ALEC. Over 60 cities across the country will come together on F29 to shut down ALEC's corporate members.

Join us in Portland, home to dozens of ALEC corporate members, as we shut them down!

Hanford - North America's Fukushima Rally - A15

[improve]

Purpose

We at Occupy Portland will hold a rally in Richland, WA, April 15, 2011, to bring information to the public about the largest nuclear waste site in the world. We are asking specifically for Oversight for the Cleanup by someone other than the DOE and for the US Government/DOE to honor the Tri-Party Agreement. We have speakers lined up from Hanford Watch, Physicians For Social Responsibility and from AIM/Warriors Society. Music will be announced in the next few weeks.

Other details
Hanford: North America's Fukushima
Why North America's Fukushima?

First, Hanford is the largest nuclear waste site in the world. It began when the Manhattan Project needed a place to build nukes for war. It has become, over time, a graveyard for nukes, for nuke pollution, i.e. uranium and plutonium waste as well as many unknown liquids posing incredible problems for the intended cleanup due to the simple fact that they are unknown. If you don't know if something is going to explode while you are trying to clean it up, you're not very likely to want to clean it up.

A note: Hanford was chosen for the Manhattan Project because the group hired by the gov't to look for the perfect location, decided that this land was not only uninhabited, but also a waste zone with nothing growing there. Of course, these were lies. The Yakima Nation lived there and still does. There was a very large community of Native Americans on the land, living off of the land and practicing their spirituality from the land and from what the land gave them. Now, the land is decimated. It is polluted. With uranium waste. With plutonium waste. The air is polluted. The waters, the beautiful Columbia River that runs from Canada down thru WA and OR is polluted. The fish are dying. The elk that roam the lands around Hanford are dying and sick. The soil is unusable. And the people from the local Indian Nations are dying from cancers related to nuclear fallout.

So why rally around Hanford for oversight and honoring the Tri-Party Agreement?

Because it affects all of us in the United States. When the people of our first nations die due to government carelessness, we must care! These are the people who taught the white man about the importance of making decisions which always concern 7 generations into the future. The world is not ours. It is our future's world.

Why rally around Hanford for oversight and honoring the Tri-Party Agreement?

Because we expect our government to do what it says it will do. To spend money to clean up its messes. To honor agreements made between itself and the Yakima Nation, the Nez Perce and the Umatilla of the Northwest when it said that if they pollute the Indian lands, they will clean it up or pay for it. Neither has happened to the degree which is necessary.

Why rally around Hanford for oversight and honoring the Tri-Party Agreement?

Because there is no real oversight for the cleanup at Hanford and because of that, workers work in unsafe environments; nuclear spills are happening without public knowledge; money is changing hands from the government to the 1% who are the Bechtel owners, the main contractors at Hanford, and the money is not spent on cleanup.

Why rally around Hanford for oversight and honoring the Tri-Party Agreement?

Because there is a leased out working nuclear facility on Hanford's grounds called The Columbia Generating Station which was built by the exact same design as Fukushima. The difference is that these buildings contain 4 times the amount of spent nuclear fuel rods in each building as did the Fukushima Reactor that blew up in Japan. We are expecting a large earthquake anytime now as reported by our scientists.

Why rally?

Because it's the right thing to do. This is about the next 7 generations and then 7 more and 7 more after that. The half-life for some nuclear waste is 250,000 years. Come to the rally and speak out against the wrongs. Encourage the change.

Key Points
  1. Hanford has a working nuclear power plant on its grounds which is called The Columbia Generating Station. It is the exact same design as Fukushima's but holds 4x's the amount of spent nuclear fuel rods in each bldg. Imagine an earthquake ripping thru there. And expect one.
  2. The Tri=Party Agreement between the Yakama, Nez Perce and Umatilla Indians is not being taken seriously by the DOE. They need to clean up Hanford completely, which is impossible, and re-pay the nations for all that Hanford has destroyed.
  3. Outside oversight of the cleanup is the only way to make things happen. To have oversight, the congress needs to agree that it is necessary and create an oversight committee. This needs pressure from us, the people, to make it happen. ( Will be posting a sample letter that you can send to Congress soon.)
  4. North America needs to know that Hanford is THE LARGEST NUCLEAR WASTE FACILITY IN THE WORLD and nuclear waste IS in the ground water wells in the tri-cities, in the food they grow, in the air, in the animals and IT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR KILLING MANY PEOPLE, tho the link is unproven!
