EPIC CITY HALL SLUMBER PARTY

[improve]

  • Date: Tuesday, Jan 31 at 10:00pm until Wed Feb 1 at 8:30am

Purpose

We will be sleeping on the sidewalk in support of the basic human right to sleep, and in protest of the cities 'camping ban' which makes it illegal to create any sort of shelter (including a sleeping bag).

There are Portlanders (including families) who break the law every single night, and risk random arrest and loss of possessions, just simply by sleeping.

My goal is to make a chain of people that wraps around City Hall ensuring that members of City Council will have to literally walk over a body to get to work. Of course they will figure out a way to not have to do that, but it is still our goal!!!

We picked the 31st so that we would be in front of City Hall on the morning of February 1st when the city begins to fine Right2DreamToo, a self sustaining rest area on West Burnside.

The City of Portland's Bureau of Development Services (BDS) is fining a group that is providing emergency shelter to dozens of people in downtown for code violations related to recreational camping ordinances.

Right 2 Dream Too set up an emergency rest area for people who are houseless on Fourth and Burnside on National Homeless Day October 10, 2011. Since then R2DToo has provided shelter, food, referrals, and community for 50-70 people a night at no cost to the city.

On January 1, 2012 leaders of the group received notice that they would be fined $641.30 a month because they did not comply with city code relating to recreational camping. The group's leaders filed an appeal pointing out that this is not a recreational camping area

"There is a wide gulf between operating a recreational facility with the goal of sheltering people on vacation and operating a facility with the goal of sheltering people who can not otherwise obtain safe shelter and experience a restful sleep. It is illogical to lump them under the same set of administrative rules. We strongly object to language that suggests anything we are doing is in any way related to recreational activities."

The group offered work with the Bureau personnel to investigate the developmental permit process, and asked the City to waive penalties due to hardship. In a reply letter the Bureau of Development Services denied the appeal informed R2DToo that they must file an Administrative Review Appeal along with a fee of $1,215 by January 16, 2012 if they want to appeal further.

"Why should a group of people who sleep in tents, with no other housing option, be considered a recreational campground? ," asks Ibrahim Mubarak, one of the organizers of Right 2 Dream Too. "With hundreds of people on the street, and the numbers climbing daily, why is BDS fining us for trying to be safe and survive?"

Members of the group are undaunted, though. They will continue to talk with city officials to work out a solution while advocating for their rights.

Occupy Portland: Nationwide NDAA 2012 Congressional Protest

[improve]

  • Date: Friday, February 3, 2012
  • Time: 12:00pm until 7:00pm
  • Location: Congressional Offices Throughout the Country
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Americans across the country will gather outside congressional offices Feb. 3rd from noon to 7 p.m. to protest NDAA 2012 (H.R. 1540).

You will find your protest location by looking to see how your congressmen voted. Look below - under house and senate. There is also a link so you can find the address to your congressman's local office where your protest will take place.

House http://www.govtrack.us/congress/vote.xpd?vote=h2011-932

Senate

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/vote.xpd?vote=s2011-230

Office Locations for Congressmen

http://www.house.gov/representatives/

The objective of our demonstration is to have our congressmen repeal Section 1021 and 1022 which could lead to the indefinite military detention of Americans without due process. Make sure to contact your congressmen also. The protest is not affiliated with any particular political or grassroots organizations. We are uniting as individuals who want to stop this tyranny before it gets worse. Martin Luther King didn't need violence to affect change, neither do we.

NDAA 2012 allows for Americans to be indefinitely detained by the military without access to an attorney or a trial by jury on orders of the executive branch. Amendments to exclude American citizens were rejected by the Obama administration and senate vote (See below).

Congress and President Obama have declared war on Americans. The last time America was declared a military zone President Roosevelt authorized the internment of Americans with Executive Order 9066, issued February 19, 1942.

NDAA 2012 is unconstitutional. Sections 1021 and 1022 repeal the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 8th amendments to the Constitution. The Constitution is the supreme law of the land and declares our right to due process. No law can supersede it. We have a right to our day in court with a jury of our peers.

Other details
Liberty oriented organizations and Meetups please schedule the event. Individuals should use blogs, forums, twitter, face book and youtube to let others know about the protest. Participants should notify the local and national media of their protests.

NO WAR WITH IRAN RALLY and MARCH

[improve]

  • Date: Sun, February 12
  • Time: 3pm – 5pm
  • Location: Corner of SW Salmon st and SW Park Ave, Portland OR
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Stop the war of the 1%

We the people of Occupy Portland condemn any act or form of violence.
We believe that any problem can be resolved in a peaceful way, and we are against any future conflict against the nation of Iran.
We want peace on our Planet, not war and no more false flags.

The people of Iran and America do not deserve to be used as tools for the benefit of the 1%. We the people of the world will lose in this war and nobody will win from any side, except the very few people who are orchestrating this insane war.

For this reason we want to make a call out to all the occupations in the country to join us in a national day of anti-war rally and march event this coming February 12, 2012, to make it clear to President Obama and the government that we don’t want any war with Iran.

Going to war with Iran means more tax money will be invested in the war, that in education or health care.

Going to war with Iran means the possibility of future bigger events and possibly war with other nations such as Russia, China, and Pakistan. For the future of the human civilization and our mother earth, let’s stop this madness and make our voice heard.

Peace will come when all come together as one.
WE ARE GOING TO HAVE MUSIC AND SPEAKERS FIRST AND THEN WE WILL MARCH.

  • Location: SW Naito Pkwy & SW Ankeny St, Portland, Oregon 97204
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Occupy Portland invites you to Shut Down the Corporations!

Occupy Portland calls for a national day of non-violent direct action to reclaim our voices and challenge our society’s obsession with profit and greed by shutting down the corporations.

We are rejecting a society that does not allow us control of our future.

We will reclaim our ability to shape our world in a democratic, cooperative, just and sustainable direction.

We call on the Occupy Movement and everyone seeking freedom and justice to join us in this day of action.

There has been a theft by the 1% of our democratic ability to shape and form the society in which we live and our society is steered toward the destructive pursuit of consumption, profit and greed at the expense of all else.

By shutting down the corporations for a day we begin to recreate our democracy. We begin to create a society that is organized to meet human needs and sustain life.

Leap into Action on F29!

Occupy Portland called for a national day of action on February 29th to shut down corporations associated with the anti-democratic American Legislative Exchange Council, ALEC. Over 60 cities across the country will come together on F29 to shut down ALEC's corporate members.

Join us in Portland, home to dozens of ALEC corporate members, as we shut them down!
