nice

I think this wiki is looking really good. Nice. Michael (talk) 03:40, 5 August 2010 (PDT)

Thanks! It's not done yet... this is just going to be a basis for the PortlandWiki skin. If you have any ideas about what features or visual effects you want in the skin, let me know at PortlandWiki_talk:Community_Portal#Skin.2C_interface_changes. -kotra (talk) 12:35, 5 August 2010 (PDT)

Main page temporarily moved into template space

After the mediawiki upgrade today, all links to the project namespace (PortlandWiki:) on the main page displayed as redlinks. Project namespace links on all other page still display correctly, so I moved all the content of the main page into a template Template:Main page, which is transcluded on the actual main page PortlandWiki. This is a clumsy hack but it should work until I figure out what's going on. We can still edit the main page, we just have to edit it Template:Main page. Sorry for any confusion. -kotra (talk) 09:53, 20 July 2010 (PDT)

Main page issues

As of January 5, 2010 (Happy New Year, by the way), looks like significant (template?) errors on main page. Perhaps discuss at this week's WikiWednesday? -WikiMaster (talk) 16:58, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

It's due to Template:Citation/core having been imported from Wikipedia; it's necessary for {{cite web}} templates, which are used on the main page and at least one other page (Powell's Books), to work but it appears to fail miserably if imported as-is from Wikipedia. The reason being, I would assume, it relies on a whole army of other templates to work properly, templates which we don't have imported yet. I'm tempted to try to just rebuild the citation template from scratch, without reliance on any other templates, but I might not be able to get it to have the same functionality.
Anyway, I've blanked the template for now. This brings us back to the error we've had for week or two (see the bottom of the main page now), but at least it's not as obtrusive. I'll be at the meeting tomorrow (health permitting) so we can discuss it! -kotra (talk) 01:42, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Headline News

Economist says Portland's economic strategy isn't working

A news item for the main page? Good idea Michael. I've added it. Eventually we'll probably want to devise some sort of system for adding recent news (maybe there's a Google News aggregator for the search term "Portland, Oregon" we could use) but manually adding news articles as we feel like it is probably fine for now. -kotra (talk) 09:17, 23 December 2009 (UTC)
Hmm. We have both a "Recent Developments" section and a "News" section that seem to be both used for Portland-related news. I think the "Recent Developments" section was originally supposed to be updates on the workings of the wiki. I propose we eliminate it for now since it's not being used for that purpose. I've just gone ahead and done that but feel free to revert if you disagree. -kotra (talk) 05:09, 25 December 2009 (UTC)
Also I wonder if it would be a good idea to transclude the News page into the News section, by typing {{:News}}, like this:

Channel 6 Portland - Your best option for news, weather, stock market quotes, sports and local events.

Channel 12 Portland - Local news and human interest stories for local residents!

That way whenever we update the News page it automatically shows up on the main page too. The idea is that we wouldn't have to update it in both places. -kotra (talk) 05:09, 25 December 2009 (UTC)

Main page Draft 2

Mark Dilley and Dave Myers set up a draft main page yesterday. I think it's a good start, looks nice, clean, functional. It looks a little too derivative of other wikis to me though... people will look at it and think "oh, it's just like Wikipedia" or such. So I would suggest at least some cosmetic changes. How should we proceed with making changes? I think discussion is important here especially in this early stage so we don't step on each others' toes. -Kotra 17:14, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

Oh! Sorry, my toes are fine by the way. I meant just in case. -Kotra 05:13, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
  • I agree with Kotra - that the page looks to Wikipedia like - please, anyone feel free to work on it. ~~ MarkDilley

Move planning somewhere else?

Would it be appropriate to move all the wiki planning stuff on this talk page and the main page somewhere else, like a PortlandWiki:Planning page or the PortlandWiki:Community Portal page linked in the navigation box on the left? In the more prominent wikis I think normally this page is reserved for discussion having to do with the main page. -Kotra 21:01, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Since the stuff on the main page has been moved to PortlandWiki:Community Portal, my vote is to move the stuff unrelated to the main page on this talk page to PortlandWiki talk:Community Portal. -Kotra 17:24, 27 October 2009 (UTC)
I agree about moving it. there is an overwhelming amount of information and it might be helpful to break it out a little. --Psychomia 22:39, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
Ok, I've moved all the stuff about planning and the wiki to PortlandWiki talk:Community Portal, leaving just the stuff about the main page, PortlandWiki, and this page (Talk:PortlandWiki) here. Anyone feel free to revert me or comment here if this is undesirable! -kotra 21:33, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

Main page drafts

The current homepage is good for us wiki-folk in the planning stages, but it's sort of plain and not very appealing, aesthetically. I think we should put up a more user-friendly main page before we "launch" the wiki. Therefore, I've come up with a very basic draft: Portland Wiki/Draft 1. It's mostly to get some ideas and structure down.

What do you folks think? We should come up with more drafts/ideas to choose from, if people are willing. -Kotra 20:57, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Social Media

Dave, Mark, and I are working on PortlandWiki accounts on Facebook, Twitter (with the assistance of Steven Walling), Google Groups, and other social media. Eventually we'll probably want to put links to them either on the main page (AKA PortlandWiki) or in the skin itself, for example as icons in the left sidebar. In the meantime, we can dump links to what we have so far in this section. -kotra (talk) 21:13, 23 August 2010 (PDT)

File Upload Issues

Numerous issues uploading files this morning. Smaller images seem to upload, but larger images appear to get hung up in some sort of loop before ending in an "error." Similar-size files have successfully uploaded until now.
Is this issue connected to the page title updates we (Mark, Kotra, Dave) made yesterday evening?

  • The error's alert page in the browser is labeled: "500 Internal Server Error"
  • The error's body text:

Dysfunctional Former Front Page Content

Maybe we should fix it or lose it. -WikiMaster (talk) 14:47, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

Fix it, is my vote. I think an updated site map as a bottom section of home, communtity, and events pages will do nicely, maybe even primary categories. I'll do a bit of footwork to see how other lifestyle sites do it, and then follow through with it here. There's something to be said about getting the category page design spruced up, so that it can draw contributor interest. --Matthew (talk) 13:12, 11 May 2011 (PDT)
