Tom McCall Waterfront Park is a popular park on the west bank of the Willamette, host to many festivals and events.

History

Much of what is now Tom McCall Waterfront Park used to be the original downtown Portland. The buildings that had been there were razed in the earlier half of the 20th century and were replaced by Harbor Drive, a short section of north-south highway fit tightly between the river and the huge Portland Public Market Building (razed).

Removal of Harbor Drive began in 1974. Traces of its erased ramps and approaches are still visible in the area, as well as its heavily-reinforced riverside "battlements". The park was designed by ZGF Architects under the leadership of young Mayor Neil Goldschmidt. It was dedicated in 1978, and renamed for McCall in 1984.
