Red and Black Cafe is a worker-owned, vegan restaurant located in the Buckman neighborhood (close in SE Portland) at SE 12th Avenue & SE Oak Street. The cafe's worker-owners are unionized with the Portland branch of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and the cafe is a closed shop, meaning all of its workers are union members. The cafe also belongs to the United States Federation of Worker Cooperatives. The cafe is a hub of radical activity in the Portland area, hosting many social justice oriented activists, speakers, and musical acts. Every Wednesday at the cafe is "Worker Wednesday" and customers can receive a discount by showing their union membership card. Red and Black Cafe made international news when a worker asked a Portland police officer to leave the business.[1]
