Purpose

Facebook Stop The Pipeline!

  • Terry Schrunk Plaza--Boca Marimba will start playing at 1:00.
  • We will begin with speeches around 2:00.
  • At approximately 2:45, we'll head down the sidewalks of 3rd Avenue enroute to the *Pioneer Courthouse* and turn up Yamhill. Once there, we will encircle the courthouse.
  • We'll probably wrap up at 4:00.

"Hands Around the Pioneer Courthouse" is on Sunday, November 6th. We will assemble at Terry Schrunk Plaza at 1:00 pm and at 2:00 pm we will take some time for some brief speeches on the Keystone XL Pipeline and Tar Sands. We will then walk to the historic Pioneer Courthouse and encircle it at approximately 2:45. The action calls for President Obama's rejection of the Keystone XL Pipeline, which is proposed to be constructed from the Tar Sands oil fields of northern Alberta through America's Heartland to refineries near the Gulf of Mexico. Our encirclement of the Pioneer Courthouse replicates Washington DC's "Hands Around The White House". The pipeline's construction raises grave concerns about potential catastrophic environmental damage to life on our special planet.

Many of you probably know about the issue of the tar sands and Keystone XL pipeline. Most of us are here because we recognize fundamental issue around the system. These issues make people aware of how far system has failed. Some issues are directly about survival. The tar sands relates to ecological destruction. Tar sands in Canada is the most costly. for 1 gallon extracted, 4 gallons h20 polluted. Pipeline touches aquifers for 30% of agriculture in this country. the likelihood of leaking pipeline is 100%.

The issue is dark and it highlights how corrupt the system is because it's willing to fund this project, banks bailed out by taxpayer money and those banks are enabling destruction of the climate. This action is demanding President Obama's rejection of the Keystone XL Pipeline, which is proposed to be constructed from the Tar Sands oil fields of northern Alberta through America's Heartland to refineries near the Gulf of Mexico. The pipeline's construction raises extreme concerns about the oil companies' ability to push through catastrophic environmental damage.

Note: It was originally hoped that there would a viewing of the new documentary, Pipe Dreams. The viewing will not be possible until at least November 17th.

Purpose

OUR FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHT IS NOT LIMITED TO CHAPMAN PARK!

Some of us are taking our right to peaceable assembly to the steps of the Federal Reserve Bank 1500 Southwest 1st Avenue # 100, Portland, OR 97201.

We will be showing Solidarity with Wall Street starting at 10am Monday morning 11/7 and hopefully will continue throughout the week during business hours. This is a peaceful show of solidarity. Bring signs. :) We encourage research of The Federal Reserve which will help us to reason with the public at those locations about why we want to end the FED. We have some fliers we will be handing out. We will try to maintain a continual presence at this buildings during business hours throughout the week so come down when you can. Many will return to the Occupy site at night but what you do is your choice.

Purpose

The Governor's nominees to the Oregon Education Investment Board are scheduled for Senate confirmation on Nov. 18. Until their confirmation, nominees are joining the Governor on a Senate Bill 909 work group. After confirmation they will meet as the OEIB.

Notice from Deb Mayer from "Oregon Save Our Schools"

This is what they are up to: They are redesigning the entire education system for the state. A council called Learn Works has orchestrated this plan which is a rehash of a plan conceived 20 years ago with original funding from the B & M Gates Foundation. Most of the 30 member Learn Works team are from the business community. There are no parent or student groups represented and educators are only minimally represented. The plan is to ditch the Superintendent of Education and put a CEO in charge who, the counsel advises should not be an educator but a business person instead, will design for Oregon a "Cradle to Career" system that taxpayers will fund. The language of Learn Works is scary and similar to ALEC legislation being passed in other states. More testing of students, more accountability, do more with less, etc. They plan to apply for the NCLB waiver which is a bad idea -- California estimated the waiver will cost their state $3.1 billion. Learn Works has developed no budget for the waiver or their new plan.

The Governor, (our Democratic Governor!), plans to rush this into law without public discussion or debate. Our group, Oregon Save Our Schools, thinks the public has a right to know about the future the governor's office is planning for us all. Students, parents, and educators should have a voice in this monumental decision. We are demanding that the Learn Works committee be transparent, allow public to know what they are up to and slow the process down.

We have asked the Oregonian and other media to report about the plan. No media has been at any of the meetings that our group has attended -- since September.

The next two meetings will be Thursday, Nov. 10, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Since they are open to the public. I would like to invite [[[Occupy Portland]] to attend.

The morning meeting is at the Waterfront Marriott. It will be warm inside, but you may have to sit on the floor as you listen to your future being decided for you. The afternoon meeting is at the World Trade Center. You can see from the agenda below that "Invited Testimony" is scheduled, but public testimony is not. Both meetings are only blocks away from Occupy. So . . .

I'm sharing my invitation with Occupy Portland to attend the public meetings on education reform.

Bring a sign. Bring cameras and video recorders. Bring the media.

This is your education and career we're talking about. Make your voice heard. Their may be the need for a mic check.

Armistice Day

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, it became “All quiet on the western front.” An armistice signed at six o’clock that morning took effect and brought a cease-fire to the “War to end all wars.” Since that fateful hour, most nations, which fought in that conflict, observe Armistice Day. The United States in 1938 made it official with a proclamation that states in part: “…it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations; and…inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples.”

Unfortunately the horrors of World War One were to be outdone by those of World War Two and to honor the sacrifices of the veterans who fought in it, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day in 1954. While it is fitting and proper to honor all veterans for their service, it is a shame that the original intent of November eleventh has become lost to the militarization and commercialization of this important date.

Veterans For Peace Chapter 72 will be gathering at the Pioneer Courthouse Square for our seventh annual commemoration of this solemn day. We invite the public to join us “with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace Through good will and mutual understanding between nations…”.

Get On The Bridge: We Declare a State of Economic Emergency for the 99%

Purpose

On Nov. 17th, we will declare an economic emergency for the 99%:

  • 25 million Americans are looking for work, but Congress won’t pass a jobs bill
  • Super-Committee budget cuts could kill millions more jobs
  • This economy works for the richest 1%, not the 99%

The Steel Bridge [1], which was built and always owned by Union Pacific Railroad, [2] is structurally deficient (how?) and in need of repair. This is work that needs doing, even while thousands in Portland are unemployed!

Bridges like this one are symbols of politicians’ failure to pass a jobs bill or do anything to help the 99%, while the richest 1% keep getting richer.

On Nov. 17th, we say enough is enough. We can’t wait any longer.

What was the Works Progress Administration?

The Works Progress Administration (WPA) employed 2.7 million Americans in 1935, 2.3 million in 1936, 1.7 million in 1937 and 2.9 million in 1938. Over 9.7 million jobless Americans received WPA paychecks over those four years.

Due to the growth in our nation's workforce, if the WPA was re-enacted today, the equivalent numbers would be 7.7 million in 2012, 6.5 million in 2013, 4.9 million in 2014 and 8.3 million in 2015. That totals 27.4 million - 1.7 million or so less than our real unemployment level in October 2011.

What did the WPA do?

According to American-Made, a book by Nick Taylor, the Works Progress Administration:

  • built 650,000 miles of roads, 78,000 bridges, 125,000 civilian and military buildings, 800 airports built, improved or enlarged, 700 miles of airport runways;
  • served almost 900 million hot lunches to schoolchildren and operated 1,500 nursery schools;
  • presented 225,000 concerts to audiences totaling 150 million;
  • performed plays, vaudeville acts, puppet shows, and circuses before 30 million people; and
  • produced 475,000 works of art and at least 276 full-length books and 701 pamphlets.

Taylor wrote that the statistics were "silent on the transformation of the infrastructure that occurred, the modernization of the country, the malnutrition defeated and the educational prospects gained, the new horizons opened."

We did it once. Let’s do it now!

The WPA built a stronger, more interconnected and more modern nation. It followed President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s promise that the work would have a "lasting impact on the nation." And it did.

From the Timberline Lodge on Oregon's Mt. Hood, the Newton County Courthouse in Jasper, Arkansas to the National Guard Armory in San Jose, California, from the Pioneer Bowl in Minot, North Dakota to the Riverwalk in San Antonio, Texas, the WPA left its mark upon our land.

At a total cost of $10.5 billion - the equivalent of $130.9 billion today - it rescued a nation from the Great Depression and saved 8.6 million Americans from the pangs of poverty and destitution.

We can put an end to this Grave Recession. We can put millions to work each year. We can hire them to modernize, strengthen and connect our service economy. We can use their skills to revitalize and renovate our manufacturing and transportation sectors. And we can push the President of the United States and the Congress to give us a chance to prove what Americans can do when the chips are down.
