Stop the Library Cuts

[improve]

  • Date: Thu Dec 22
  • Time: 9:30am until 12:30pm
  • Location: Multnomah building (501 SE Hawthorne Blvd. PDX)
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

We need to tell the Multnomah County Commissioners loud and clear that we want a fully funded library.

Multnomah County Library

The voters in Multnomah County love their library, and it is the cornerstone of access to information. This access is under attack. Our community voted by over 70% margin to allow for the creation of a library district back in 2010.

Now the board of county commissioners is likely not giving the voters a choice in the matter. They are proposing to let us decide if we want 20% cuts (by renewing an 89 cent/$1000 assessed value levy) or 66% cuts (voting down the levy).

I say we should tell them NO CUTS. You can give 3 min testimony or just show your support by standing in solidarity or hold a sign in your hands.

Please send this out to anyone who lives here and loves their access to free information, and wants to keep it that way.

In Solidarity, Grant Swanson

the EfRytIng DRiVe

...a niGht of

1ooO blANKEts!

FREE SHOW

On any given night there are at least 2000 people sleeping on the streets of Downtown Portland. These people have little prospects for bettering their individual situations. High unemployment rates, mental health cuts, and cuts in the social services agency budgets assure that this will be the most populated the sidewalks have been in the history of Portland...

While we are all concerned and sympathetic regarding the situation on our streets, many citizens feel as if they dont know how to help. We are offering a opportunity to make an enormous difference in someones life with minimal impact on your own. All we need is anything that you can bear to part with. If you have ever been cold then you can appreciate what a difference something as simple as a pair of sweatpants can make. Consider the simple joy that a blanket or a warm coat can make... now imagine the healing power of 1000 blankets? That is our goal: to raise as much usable winter wear as we can and to use blankets as our measuring stick.

THIS IS NOT AN EVENT TO GATHER GOODS FOR THE OCCUPATION

The people we are trying to reach are known as the "hidden homeless" because they are not out in view of the public, this demographic is made up largely of complete family units sleeping in cars or shelters.

Should a person involved with the Occupation find himself/herself in need of gear, he/she will have to comply with whatever conditions the Downtown Chapel places on all of the people they serve...

SO... we will use our proven formula

rappers+DJs+cool people +cool business = problems solving

I will bring you a kickass night of hiphop FOR FREE!

And you bring me efryting you got...

Hats, gloves, coats, scarfs, earmuffs, leggings, hoodies, socks, sleeping bags, and of course blankets.

Everything that we raise will be donated to and redistributed by The Downtown Chapel.

This is an excerpt I took from their mission statement:

"Dedicated to serving our neighbors experiencing poverty and homelessness, our parish's Community Programs are dynamic expressions of our faith in action. Whether someone is in need of food, clothing, hygiene, bus tickets, or just a friend, that person is treated with the respect and dignity that they deserve. Our focus on hospitality allows us to focus on each person, rather than just the need of that person, and begin to walk with them towards positive transitions and engagement in community."

Dogcupy Portland

[improve]

  • Date: Saturdays
  • Time: 11:00am until 2:00pm
  • Location: Bank of America Hawthorne Branch 3757 SE Hawthorne, Portland, OR
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

MAN'S BEST FRIEND IS NOT THE BIG BANKS!

IF YOU DON'T HAVE A DOG, BORROW A DOG.

We are showing that the Occupation is more than just downtown.

This event is held in solidarity with the Occupy Portland movement.

We will be meeting at the corner of 37th and Hawthorne, and protesting in front of all 3 banks in the immediate area...

Although you are welcome to protest wherever is convenient and oppressive.

PLEASE BRING YOUR DOGS ON A LEASH

This is a creative way to involve all of our friends who still want to participate in the Occupy movement but don't necessarily want to go downtown.

This is a creative and PEACEFUL protest to draw positive media attention to our cause.

Who could talk shit about a bunch of God's most loyal creatures?

We also hope that this kind of event will inspire creativity within the ranks of the Occupiers.

So please join us. I'll bring the dog treats and you guys bring the creative dog signs...

Sunday

OccupyChristmasPDX!

[improve]

  • Date: Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011
  • Time: All day!
  • Location: Throughout the Portland-Vancouver Metropolitan Region!
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Announcing #OccupyChristmasPDX

On Dec. 25, we are bringing the Occupy spirit everywhere!

Host an Occupier or two, and hear from their experiences and engage in conversations and community building!

Built on the success of #OccupyThanksgivingPDX, with some twist, #OccupyChristmasPDX is a region-wide, decentralized, diversified event with two-fold goals:

  • We recognize that for many without families and/or housing, including a significant number of active Occupiers, the Christmas Day represents deprivation, major inconvenience and isolation as virtually nothing is open and they may have limited or no access to their daily necessities as well as to social interactions.
  • As a group committed to social and economic justice, we use this occasion not only to ameliorate the important needs but also to demonstrate such needs exist, and that in America, an observance of a holiday is a privilege for some.

Christmas Day is often a slow-paced day with families and friends, regardless of one's religious affiliation. We find that this would present an ideal setting for conversations and learning. We bring Occupiers to your home and neighborhood through this program, and thereby bringing the spirit and energy of the Occupy movement where people live.

While we do this on Dec. 24/25, this is a non-sectarian and interfaith project.

Neither the hosts nor the Occupiers are expected to, or required to, be Christians or participate in "traditional" Christmas activities. In fact, if you are an atheist, a secular humanist, a Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, or any other non-Christian type person and will be having the Sunday off, you are more than welcome to participate in this event!

Registration deadline is now Saturday, Dec. 24 at 2 p.m.!
UPDATE (12/23 1
30PM): All sign-ups received so far are being matched. The deadline has been extended to 2PM Saturday, Dec. 24; however, you will need to be able to access email between 2 and 5 p.m. so you can contact each other to make detailed arrangements.

News Article

Here are the minutes from the Nov 2, Des Moines GA:

FIRST IN THE NATION CAUCUS OCCUPATION CAMPAIGN WORKING GROUP

We reviewed the proposition that was passed in the GA about this campaign:

In solidarity with Occupy Wall Street, Des Moines issues a call to action to people around the planet.

We are excited to announce the First in the Nation Caucus Occupation. This winter, presidential campaign headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa and political events throughout the state will be occupied. Join us.

For too long, greedy corporations and corrupted politicians have dictated public policy and political interests on a global scale. Although these corporations and moneyed interests have vast capital resources, now every dollar belonging to the 1% shall be countered by a voice. An individual. One of the 99%.

We demand our grievances no longer be ignored.

After much discussion, the group reached consensus on the following campaign goals:

To reshape the political discourse during the Caucus season around the concerns of the 99%

To include non-violent civil disobedience in our campaign activities
