Northwest District is a neighborhood in Northwest Portland, home to the Alphabet District, the commercial strips of 21st and 23rd Avenues, Wallace Park, Couch Park, a good inventory of fine old homes, and a high concentration of 1920s-style poured-concrete apartment houses in 3- and 4-story "U" shapes.
The Alphabet Historic District is roughly defined by 2nd Avenue out west to 24th Avenue (where the hills start), and from the major arterial Burnside up north to Vaughn (where the mood turns industrial) in strict alphabetical order. In the year 2000 the entire district was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
On 21st Avenue: Bastas, the Blue Moon Tavern, the independent Cinema 21 theater, Caffe Mingo, Joe's Cellar, and the nationally known Paley's Place.
On the slightly more upscale 23rd Avenue: Kornblatt's Delicatessen, one of the two Papa Haydn locations in the city, and Legacy Good Sam.
