Welcome sign beside the well-manicured visitor entrance.

Donald E. Long Home or Donald E. Long School is the only juvenile detention facility in Multnomah County, also serving Clackamas County and Washington County. Donald E. Long has a reputation as one of the best of its kind, mainly because it is clean and offers classes.[1] However, all inmates attend the same low-level (basic multiplication, etc) classes regardless of ability, making them worthless for many inmates. Their brief daily access to the outside world and fresh air consists of being let out into concrete enclosures without even grass. A small vegetable garden prominently displayed at the north end of the complex, complete with signage proudly proclaiming to the street the existence of a vegetable garden, appears to be mainly a PR ploy.
