Red and Black Cafe was a worker-owned anarchist vegan restaurant located in the Buckman neighborhood (close in SE Portland) at SE 12th Avenue & SE Oak Street. For several years, the cafe's worker-owners were unionized with the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and the cafe was a closed shop (meaning all of its workers must be union members) with a union shop card. The cafe also belonged to the United States Federation of Worker Cooperatives. During its peak years of activity, the cafe was a hub of radical activity in the Portland area, hosting many social justice oriented activists, speakers, and musical acts. Red and Black Cafe made international news when a worker asked a Portland police officer to leave the business.[1]
