Hawthorne Boulevard is an East-West four-lane arterial street running through Southeast Portland. At its west end it terminates at the Hawthorne Bridge, which connects it to SW Madison in Downtown, while its east end terminates at SE 60th Avenue. Hawthorne is the southern boundary for the Buckman and Sunnyside neighborhoods, and the northern boundary for the Hosford-Abernethy and Richmond neighborhoods.

Hawthorne is well known as a popular shopping district, particularly between SE 34th and SE 39th.

Before the 1890s, Hawthorne was named Asylum Avenue because the Oregon Hospital for the Insane (now Oregon State Hospital) was then situated next to it. After the hospital was removed, Hawthorne was renamed in honor of the hospital's founder, James C.Hawthorne.
