What do you folks think of a raffle as a way to attract people? We could give away things like leftover Wikipedia swag (if Travis is ok with it), fully written PortlandWiki pages on the winner's choice of topic, and other random things (may not need to be wiki related). Like a framed photo of one of Jimmy Wales' most smug/creepy' "glamour shots" (eg. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jimmy_Wales_Fundraiser_Appeal.JPG ). PORTLANDWIKI BARN RAISING IDEAS

Michael Andersen: "Ten really useful pages." Michael's Portland Afoot features "really useful" content that he uses to introduce new readers to the publication's value. Suggests we do the same for PortlandWiki, and that such content is a good candidate to organize PortlandWiki's "barn raising" activity around.

Kotra: Tangible rewards: Barnstars[1] (as seen on TV Wikipedia). Adopt Wikipedia's custom of rewarding PortlandWiki contributors for hard work and due diligence by awarding them a barnstar.

Kotra: Reward board. Another Wikipedia custom where an informal page is created where folks can offer specific rewards to editors willing to take on a particular task. [2]

PortlandWiki Social Media Person

Dave: Can PortlandWiki interest a local marketing services provider to include PortlandWiki in her / his marketing services repertoire? For example, Poor Boy Possibilities, LLC is one local marketing services provider who provides social media marketing services to Portland mom & pop businesses. If we (core PortlandWiki admins and larger PortlandWiki community) were to consider this kind of approach to creating "starter pages" for local businesses, what "rules" will we want to have in place? This is potentially a controversial area, so we'll want input from a core group of PortlandWiki admins at the very least.

Proposed Rules

  • The local business owner must clearly understand that she/he is not required to pay for PortlandWiki page, but voluntarily agrees to pay a social media service provider to put up a starter page on her/his behalf, and as a benefit to the PortlandWiki community.
  • The assumed motivation for the business owner to pay for someone to start her/his page is because s/he realizes s/he may never get around to it and doesn't want to wait for someone else to voluntarily take the initiative.
  • The business owner must clearly understand that others may come along and contribute to the page. Those contributions may not necessarily meet the business owner's approval, but nonetheless can be legitimate and appropriate contributions.

Barnraising notes from MondayMeets | December 27, 2010.

Kotra figures that PortlandWiki's Barnraising should feel like an "event."

Door prizes/free raffle

What do you folks think of a free raffle as a way to attract people? We could give away things like leftover Wikipedia swag (if Travis is ok with it), fully written PortlandWiki pages on the winner's choice of topic, and other random things (may not need to be wiki related). Like a framed photo of one of Jimmy Wales' most smug/creepy' "glamour shots" (eg. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jimmy_Wales_Fundraiser_Appeal.JPG ). PortlandWiki - Get Involved!

PortlandWiki is the wiki-based "knowledge commons" for Portland. It's a bit like having a "Wikipedia for Portland." The PortlandWiki difference? PortlandWiki is about Portland (duh) and it's more FUN!

PortlandWiki wants YOU! To contribute. To share your knowledge. To have fun building a community-powered knowledge commons with other PortlandWikians.

Getting Started

  • Come to one of our twice-weekly meetups (each Monday & Wednesday).
  • Start your own meetup.
  • Create a PortlandWiki account and share your knowledge.
  • The list of possibilities is endless!

PortlandWiki Barnraising

PortlandWiki is having a "barn raising" party in early March. Our goal is to focus on fleshing out PortlandWiki's content. We're still sorting out the date for our barn raising party, but we've narrowed it down to Wednesday, March 2nd or Saturday, March 5th. Please join us!

(We should also incorporate Kotra's "very personal appeal" pic.)

Flyer text v2

Here's a shortened version so people aren't overloaded with text. If it is too short I can still go with the original version!
