A Dance Company is Born
Polaris Dance Company is a non-profit arts organization that emerged in Portland in 2002.[1] Robert Guitron, the artistic director, was approached by four dancers after one of his classes in 2002, and they asked him if they could start a company together. Guitron told the dancers that there was not enough money to start a company, but the dancers told him that they would work for free. They started a fundraiser and managed to have their first performance and PSU's Lincoln Performance Hall for under $7,000.
A review of "REPO," a production Polaris staged in December 2010, asserted the production "has beauty but lacks clarity." The same reviewer did admire the "company's sheer energy: these dancers are in terrific shape."[2] Polaris Dance Company applies the emotions felt in everyday life to the choreography they perform onstage. The members of the company also teach classes at the Polaris Dance Studio (1051 SW Taylor), and support all ranges of dance ability. To peruse a list of classes, see the class schedule available at the Polaris web site.
