TriMet apps tap into TriMet's free online databases to build programs for iPhone, Android, web and other platforms to make it easier to ride Portland's transit system. Their most common uses are for trip planning (similar to TriMet's own online trip planner), arrival times (similar to TriMet's own transit tracker) and mapping (similar to TriMet's own system map). These third-party apps typically add functions, such as mobile location-finding and graphical interfaces, that TriMet's own programs lack.

The apps are possible thanks to the agency's innovative effort to release its arrival data on the Web.

These are generally the most full-featured apps, telling you when the next bus or train is coming and figuring out how to get from one place to another in the TriMet system.
