Welcome To Portland!

Welcome To Portland! is a resource guide for new comers to the city for smooth sailing into Portland. This web/mobile App will help make new immigrants and foreign students feel welcome in the city. To reduce their time to get adjusted, this App will connect them to their ethnic, cultural and educational resources in the city. It will also provide hints on the first things to do after arriving in Portland.

IIT Alumni association - Oregon chapter is building this App for Portland's CivicApp [1]contest.

We have chosen to use a wiki for adding the content. These wiki pages will be about ethnic restaurants or food cart and ethnic grocery stores. Contributors will also add wiki pages for businesses such as interpreters, ESL tutors, immigration lawyers, notary public with language skills. Contributors will also add listings of local ethnic festivals or events. For this purpose, we would like to use PortlandWiki.

Supported ethnicities

Here are the first of the ethnicities that are supported:

Going forward

We are actively recruiting contributors of different ethnicity to add wiki pages to PortlandWiki. These contributors/authors are typically Portland residents who are well settled and are well connected. Some of these will be volunteers/elected officials of local ethnic associations. Others would be immigrant and refugee counselors (primarily from IRCO.

We will use MediaWiki API to present this content within our web/mobile App.
