The Portland Art Museum is a perfectly respectable civic art museum on the South Park Blocks.

The collection includes artifacts from native American artists, Pacific Northwest artists from the 1930s, an eerie Alfred Maurer cubist portrait of George Washington that deserves to be explained better (it was his last canvas), and one truly great image by the French academic painter William Bouguereau, among many other half-hidden treasures.

The original 1932 building was designed by Pietro Belluschi, shockingly modern at the time. It had been expanded three or four times before the most recent renovation in 2008, which took over the neighboring Masonic Temple to the north with new exhibition space, a basement cinema, and meeting space.
