James Terwilliger was one of the earliest settlers of Portland, establishing a Donation Land Claim just south of the one claimed by Asa Lovejoy and Francis Pettygrove. He arrived in what was to become Portland in 1844, eventually setting up a blacksmith's shop.

His legacy lives on today in the name of the Terwilliger Curves.
