On any given night there are at least 2000 people sleeping on the streets of Downtown Portland. These people have little prospects for bettering their individual situations. High unemployment rates, mental health cuts, and cuts in the social services agency budgets assure that this will be the most populated the sidewalks have been in the history of Portland...
While we are all concerned and sympathetic regarding the situation on our streets, many citizens feel as if they dont know how to help. We are offering a opportunity to make an enormous difference in someones life with minimal impact on your own. All we need is anything that you can bear to part with. If you have ever been cold then you can appreciate what a difference something as simple as a pair of sweatpants can make. Consider the simple joy that a blanket or a warm coat can make... now imagine the healing power of 1000 blankets? That is our goal: to raise as much usable winter wear as we can and to use blankets as our measuring stick.
- THIS IS NOT AN EVENT TO GATHER GOODS FOR THE OCCUPATION
The people we are trying to reach are known as the "hidden homeless" because they are not out in view of the public, this demographic is made up largely of complete family units sleeping in cars or shelters.
Should a person involved with the Occupation find himself/herself in need of gear, he/she will have to comply with whatever conditions the Downtown Chapel places on all of the people they serve...
- SO... we will use our proven formula
rappers+DJs+cool people +cool business = problems solving
- I will bring you a kickass night of hiphop FOR FREE!
And you bring me efryting you got...
Hats, gloves, coats, scarfs, earmuffs, leggings, hoodies, socks, sleeping bags, and of course blankets.
- Everything that we raise will be donated to and redistributed by The Downtown Chapel.
This is an excerpt I took from their mission statement:
"Dedicated to serving our neighbors experiencing poverty and homelessness, our parish's Community Programs are dynamic expressions of our faith in action. Whether someone is in need of food, clothing, hygiene, bus tickets, or just a friend, that person is treated with the respect and dignity that they deserve. Our focus on hospitality allows us to focus on each person, rather than just the need of that person, and begin to walk with them towards positive transitions and engagement in community."
