William Overton

William Overton, along with Asa Lovejoy, made the Donation Land Claim at what became the original Portland township (the location is now part of Old Town Chinatown). It was Overton's idea to claim the land, but he didn't have the required fifty cent filing fee, so he offered to share ownership of the claim if Lovejoy would file the paperwork.

Overton did not hold onto the claim long, soon selling his interest to Francis Pettygrove for the equivalent of fifty dollars worth of goods. After completing the transaction with Pettygrove, he left the Pacific Northwest for good.

NW Overton Street is named in honor of William Overton.
