Occupy Solidarity Social Forum

[improve]

  • Date: Feb. 18/19th
  • Time: 8:00 AM
  • Location: Washington State Capitol lawn + Evergreen College, Olympia, WA.
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Occupy Olympia (WA) and the Alliance for Global Justice are hosting an Occupy Solidarity Social Forum Feb. 18-19 in the Washington state capital city.

The self-organized, social forum-type gathering is open to all occupiers and allies. (Read more at http://afgj.org/?p=1891)

Heard about Occupy Solidarity Social Forum (OSSF)?

Not the US Social Forum but inspired by the format, what the OSSF is is a smaller Occupy Wall Street conference to be held in Olympia, WA.

February 18th and 19th, Occupy Olympia is hosting the weekend of events, forums, actions, workshops and strategy sessions on and for the 99% movement.

This will be a mostly regional audience but the OSSF is being co-sponsored by the Alliance For Global Justice who is reaching out to Occupy organizations all over the US and encouraging their participation.

We think that Olympia, between the two power houses of Occupy Portland and Occupy Seattle, will be a good meeting place to have a face to face conversation that moves us towards next steps.

Other details
I want you to present a workshop at the OSSF. Register your workshop!

February 18th and 19th is not far away, fortunately there are plenty in the northwest with skills and knowledge to share.

This is the first national face to face since the Occupy movement began, we think that it will be a chance to develop the movement during a time when most encampments have gone and the winter weather has slowed us down.

This is a chance for trainings and meetings that can help make the whole stronger and weave together the strands of the movement into a cohesive fabric. This is a chance for you to get your message out to the rest of the country and build your network.

So please take the time to register as a participant and give some thought towards a workshop, training or facilitating a discussion. If you would like to table during the event please let me know.

Solidarity,

Youth Empowerment, Leadership and Activism Workshop

[improve]

  • Date: Saturday, February 18 2012
  • Time: 11am to 4pm
  • Location: Mount Scott Community Center 5530 SE 72nd Ave
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Free youth empowerment, leadership and activism workshop through Portland Parks and Rec

For links and registration, see our website: http://yeacamp.org/?page_id=584

YEA Academy is a free monthly Saturday workshop program for 12-17 year olds who want to make a difference in their community or the world.

At YEA, participants will learn ways to bring about a change on social justice issues they care about, such as:

  • homophobia
  • climate change
  • racism
  • animal rights
  • bullying

Like our flagship program, YEA Camp, YEA Academy’s curriculum is based on four areas we feel are critical for activists to develop: knowledge, skills, confidence and community to take action on the issues that matter to them.

From 11am-4pm one Saturday a month, youth have an opportunity to learn key skills like:

  • running an effective school club
  • fundraising
  • running a campaign
  • and arts activism

All while finding out about inspiring ways others are having an impact in their community, building self confidence, creating a plan to impact a societal problem, and making friends with other young change-makers.

YEA Academy is being run in partnership with Portland Parks and Recreation. Spaces are limited, so please register early.

Please note: you must enter the course codes below to find the “Youth Empowerment” course at the Portland Parks and Rec registration website. https://www.portlandparks.org/register/Start/Start.asp

Each Saturday is a separate registration, so you must register for each course code as a separate course.

February 18th, 2012 course # 365993

March 10th, 2012 course # 365994

If you have any questions about the program, please contact Laura Carver at laura@yeacamp.org or 503-347-0223

We will be meeting at the corner of 37th and Hawthorne, and protesting in front of all 3 banks in the immediate area...

Although you are welcome to protest wherever is convenient and oppressive.

This is a creative way to involve all of our friends who still want to participate in the Occupy movement but don't necessarily want to go downtown. We are showing that the Occupation is more than just downtown.

We also hope that this kind of event will inspire creativity within the ranks of the Occupiers.

So please join us. I'll bring the dog treats and you guys bring the creative dog signs...

Decolonizing Anarchism: Book Launch & IAS Board Event

[improve]

  • Date: Saturday, February 18, 2012
  • Time: 7:00pm until 10:00pm
  • Location: Red and Black Cafe 400 SE 12th Ave, Portland, OR 97214
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Maia Ramnath's new book is on the anti-authoritarian elements of India's liberation struggle, examining the history of South Asian struggles against colonialism. It is the third title in the Anarchist Interventions book series, copublished between AK Press and the IAS. Come hear about decolonizing anarchism. Copies will be available at a reduced cost.

"This is a stunningly impactful and densely researched book. Maia Ramnath has offered a vital contribution to our understanding of the long historical entanglement between liberation struggles, anticolonialism, and the radical movement of oppressed peoples against the modern nation-state.

She audaciously reframes the dominant narrative of Indian radicalism by detailing its explosive and ongoing symbiosis with decolonial anarchism" - Dylan Rodriguez

Also in attendance will be members of the Institute for Anarchist Studies (IAS).

Because the IAS is a 501(c)3 we have a board of directors, the policy making collective of the organization.

Board members will introduce themselves, talk about their organizing work and thoughts about contemporary politics, and attendees will have a chance to talk with them informally.

Please come, learn about Decolonizing Anarchism, meet the board, talk, eat delicious vegan food, and have fun. Beer and kombucha are on tap, and other drinks will also be available.

Other details
In its fifteen years of existence, the IAS has funded over 90 writing projects, giving out roughly $80,000 to individuals in 12 countries.

In addition to financing writers and copublishing books with AK Press, the IAS also publishes Perspectives on Anarchist Theory, has a speakers bureau, and organizes workshops and talks at conferences.

Twice a year the IAS meets to award $2,000 to various struggling radical writers to support their writing. For the first time the IAS will be meeting on the West Coast. IAS folks will be coming from Quebec, Ontario, New York, Philadelphia, Oakland, D.C., L.A., and Detroit.

Chakra Dance

[improve]

  • Date: Every Sunday

  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Each Sunday a special guest will guide us through a "Chakra Dance."

Among the best tools to evolve the spirit are the energy centers known as chakras. Chakra, an ancient sanskrit term meaning “wheel of light,” describes a complex human energy system of awareness.

The seven chakra centers are associated with specific areas of the physical body. Each chakra is equally important to our energy flow and vitality, and each affects all the others.

Developing one chakra while neglecting others only creates an imbalance, weakening overall strength. The goal is to have all seven chakras open, balanced and integrated.

Other details
Every Sunday morning at the Tiffany Center

  • 10:30 warmup, circle at 11, ends at 12:30
  • Cost: $10, Kids welcome and free!

Dharma Circle

[improve]

  • Date: Mondays
  • Time: 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
  • Location: Friends Meeting House, Downstairs 4312 SE Stark, Portland, OR, 97214
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Dharma Circles invite us to rest in the ease of the present moment.

Frosty leaves as non-dual teachings from the world’s wisdom traditions open into the spacious field of the heart. Reflection, silent sitting, and silent movement soften our boundaries and open awareness of our essential nature, nearer to us than our own breath.

All contemplative practices and levels of experience (or no experience) are welcome.

The door is open at 6:45. At 7:00 pm we begin with dialogue and dharma reflection, followed by an hour of silent practice.

Feel free to bring cushions, mats, or whatever is comfortable for your sitting practice (some cushions and chairs are provided).

Grounded in the heart, our actions grow from deep soil to yield fruits that enhance peace, justice, beauty, and balance in all that we do.

In a tumultuous world, maintaining a spacious heart requires attention, intention, and ever-deepening love.

Sangha or satsang is created anytime we are present with others for reflection or practice in the space of the heart, in service of truth. Sharing that intention, our dialogues invite us into reflection on our deepest Being, Mystery, Emptiness, the Beloved.

Every faith or no faith are equally welcome here.

We embrace human nature just as it is, holy and broken, perfect and imperfect at the same time, and steep together in the timeless present moment, where definitions slip away.

Gathering in satsang, sangha, or a community of practice provides a rich common ground as we travel in the terrain of the Heart.

Tuition Equity Action Day

[improve]

  • Date: Tuesday Feb 21
  • Time: 12:30pm until 5:30pm
  • Location: The Occupy Portland Office at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, 1131 SE Oak, Portland
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Love road trips? Want to help hard-working Oregon students go to college? Then join our Action Day for Tuition Equity!

In case you are unfamiliar, Tuition Equity allows all long-time students who get into public universities in Oregon to pay in-state tuition regardless of their documentation.

We were able to schedule an informational hearing which is a pretty big deal (the bill itself is up in 2013), so it’d be HUGE to have you there. We’re a big-tent organization, so even if you don’t support the issue (or just wanna learn more) and you still want to come down to experience the hearing, you’re totally welcome.

If you are in Portland and are keen for a ride to Salem, we are taking the BUSES!

Meet up at PSU at 12:30pm and should be back by 5:30pm.

Otherwise, meet on Capitol steps at 2pm.

Also, if you are a student, you’d probably have to take time off of classes, but teachers are usually excited you’re doing stuff like this (as it makes you more civically engaged and such).

Keep on rocking and we hope to see you on our buses!

Building Intentional Community

  • Location: Peace House 2116 NE 18th Ave, PDX
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Every Tuesday from 4pm to 5:30pm the Peace House (2116 NE 18th Ave, PDX) is hosting a work group to help interested Occupy participants to find ways to establish functioning intentional communities.

Drawing on their 25-year experience of living in community, members of the Peace House will share ideas, resources and "hand holding" with those who would like to get started.

This is an exercise in mutual sharing. No one is an expert in how to live together in community, but together all can learn what is needed.

Bring your vision of what kind of community you want to live in and share it with us.

Together, we will work to bring that vision into reality.

THIS TIME WE'RE ADDING SOMETHING FUN TO THIS EVENT
bring a non-twerp with you to get them on twitter (if they want) and teach them how to use it.

The ONLY purpose of this event is to celebrate our hard work and achievements over the last few months and to get to know our fellow occupiers in a fun and relaxed environment. AND- to introduce more activists to twitter. ♥

I love you all, and hope very much that you'll make plans to be there! :D

Non-tweeters are welcome of course- though as a modern revolutionary, I highly recommend that you get a twitter account! It is a very useful tool!
    • Not approved by GA- organized by an individual who simply wants to meet some awesome people with similar interests. It is my understanding that such an event doesn't need GA approval, since it is meerly social and not representative of the Occupy Portland group or movement.**

Sabrina will play music and share readings from her acclaimed anthology LIVE THROUGH THIS: On Creativity and Self-Destruction, which features seminal artists such as bell hooks, Nan Goldin, and Kate Bornstein.

Ms. Chap will be joined by readings by local scribes such as Smitty Buckler, Cooper Lee Bombardier, and other special guests.

Sabrina Chap's got classical piano skills, the ballad lyrics of Tom Waits, the onstage antics of Phyllis Diller and the voice of a whiskey angel. Her sets are a ragtime stompin' good time, full of laughs, heartbreaks, and just plain good songwriting.

A classical pianist since the age of 5, Sabrina initially came to songwriting once she picked up her first guitar in college. Her first album, Bedroom Sessions, is a collection of folk songs written exclusively on guitar and recorded in her bedroom using Garageband." from www.sabrinachap.com
