INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2012: A CALL FOR ACTION

[improve]

  • Date: Thursday, March 8, 2012
  • Time: 12:00pm until 4:30pm
  • Location: Downtown Portland, OR (specific details on location soon to be announced)
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

A call to rise up in solidarity with Women Occupy.

Day of Action Details:

Does the 1% have any idea what reality is like for everyday Americans whose homes are being foreclosed on, whose lives are uprooted by economic injustice? Let’s ask CEOs and big bankers to “walk in our shoes” and visualize the hardship so many of us are facing in the US right now. By lining up pairs of shoes tagged with identities of people, like “Becky, 46, single mother of three, teacher, FORECLOSED HOME” you can invite passersby to put themselves in the shoes of someone facing economic crisis.

  1. Gather/buy shoes — men’s, women’s and children’s shoes — from local thrift stores or do a used shoe drive from your neighbors, friends and family. Decide on a drop-off location, like your front doorstep, an office, a community center, or a café, and send out an email to your community inviting them to donate shoes. You can gather a few pairs of shoes to represent a single family whose home has been foreclosed on, or lots of shoes to indicate a large number of foreclosures in your community. Be sure to have pairs of shoes and tie or rubber band them together.
  2. Put names on the shoes --- Get shoe tags from your local office supply store. Shipping tags, 4 3/4″ x 2 3/8″ work well. If you have names of people who have had their homes foreclosed on by Bank of America, write them on the tags, preferably with their permission. Or you can write “Child/foreclosed,” “Single mother/foreclosed,” “Father of 3/foreclosed,” “Grandmother/daycare worker/foreclosed” etc.
  3. Make a sign or banner – suggested slogans:

Walk in our shoes B of A!

Women Occupy Bank of America

Justice for the 99%

Break Up Bank of America!

Bust Up Bank of America!

Women say: Stop Foreclosures!

Women say: No Evictions!

Create display in front of Bank of America -- Line up shoes with tags in a clearly visible area in front of Bank of America. Peacefully gather together in solidarity with Women all around the globe with our signs, banners, and good spirits.

Chants for the day of action--

WOMEN SAY

TO B OF A:

STOP FORECLOSURES

WOMEN SAY

TO B OF A:

END EVICTIONS

WOMEN SAY

TO B OF A:

STOP FUNDING COAL

HEY, HEY, B OF A

HOW MANY HOMES DID YOU FORECLOSE ON TODAY?

Take me out of the big banks song--

(To the tune of “Take Me Out To The Ball Game”)

Take me out of the big banks

Take me out of their game

The credit union will get my dough

I’ll cut up my credit cards, pay as I go

And it’s root, root, root for the small banks

Give them our business and thanks

And its 1,2,3 million more and we’ll close big banks

Let’s go occupy Wall Street

In every city and town

We’ll occupy houses the banks foreclosed

Make sure that no one’s left out in the cold

And it’s root, root, root for the new world

We’re building right here today

And its 1,2,3 billion more ! It’s a new ball game.

This International Women’s Day, Women Occupy have called for people across the globe to rise up against the big banks that have caused the current economic crisis.

Since its inception in the early twentieth century, International Women’s Day has been rooted in the struggle for economic justice, growing out of local demonstrations by women workers demanding shorter hours, better pay, voting rights, and an end to discrimination.

In the United States, Women Occupy will join in the collective effort of the Occupy movement to hold Bank of America accountable for predatory and irresponsible economic policies that are destroying our families and communities.

Why Target Bank of America?
Foreclosure Leader

As of June 2010, Bank of America had $88 billion worth of foreclosed homes in its portfolio — more than any other mortgage servicer in the country. In order to please investors they even started kicking people out of homes faster than other banks, instead of working with them to refinance or restructure their mortgages. Despite having higher average credit scores than men, women are more likely to receive subprime mortgages that leave them vulnerable to home foreclosure.

Poisoning Communities

Over the past 2 years, Bank of America has invested over $4.3 billion (more than any other bank) in the coal industry, one of the biggest threats to public health and climate stability.

Subprime Lending

Bank of America had a hand in the worst of the subprime lending excesses, providing financing to four of the five largest subprime lenders during the years prior to the crash. Together, these firms issued over $320 billion in subprime loans from 2005 through 2007, a disproportionate number of which went to women who would have qualified for traditional loans with far lower costs.

Predatory Lending

Bank of America subsidiary Countrywide Financial was investigated by the FBI, the U.S. Justice Department, and multiple state attorneys general in 2008 for predatory lending and securities fraud. BoA was eventually forced to pay $355 million to settle charges that Countrywide assessed higher fees and interest rates to African American and Hispanic borrowers.

Mass Layoffs

Bank of America announced up to 69,000 job cuts between 2004 and 2008. In early September 2011, Bank of America announced plans to eliminate another 30,000 jobs, more than 10 percent of its current workforce.

Executive Bonuses

Over the last ten years, the top 5 execs at BoA have been awarded $518.8 million in bonuses and compensation. CEO Brian Moynihan received a $9.05 million bonus in 2010. For his role driving the country’s economic recession, former CEO Ken Lewis awarded himself a $63 million retirement plan when he stepped down in September 2009, in addition to the $63 million he scored during the three years before his departure.

Pillaging Customers

In 2012, despite massive public outrage, Bank of America began charging a $5 debit usage fee for customers with less than a $5,000 balance and no mortgage with the bank. B of A was the first large bank to confirm it would charge this fee, which is the highest in current discourse among the banks. Bank of America, who already had some of the highest fees among banks, was recently charged with colluding with the two major credit card companies, Visa and MasterCard, to keep ATM fees high. In a letter protesting the fee, which disproportionately impacts poorer clients, Consumers Union wrote: “Consumers should not be required to pay a costly fee that appears to be arbitrary and designed to generate income to make up for Bank of America’s bad business decisions rather than covering the costs of providing debit card services.” (This was stopped by the leadership of one young woman in action.)

Violating the First Amendment

A local Bank of America branch refused to allow two Occupy Santa Cruz protesters to close their accounts, threatening to call the police if the women didn’t leave. Bank of America currently charges a fee for closing an account, which prompted Rep. Brad Miller (D-North Carolina), who resides in Bank of America’s headquarters state, to introduce a bill to protect customers from such fees.

Taking Advantage of the Military

B of A is the official bank of the US military and has branches by or on many bases, which allows them to entice military personnel to take out loans at usurious rates. Personal loans made to soldiers for a few thousand dollars can actually keep them indebted for the rest of their lives. Last May, Bank of America paid $22 million to settle charges of improperly foreclosing on active-duty troops.

Too Big To Exist

Bank of America is officially rated the biggest, scariest bank. It holds assets equal to roughly one-seventh of the country’s gross domestic product, making it too large and complex to manage or regulate properly. When the bank’s poor financial condition prompted a fall in stock causing huge fear among investors, Warren Buffett scooped up a $5 billion preferred stock deal, effectively betting that the government won’t let this big bank go bust.

Fraud Lawsuit Settlements

Bank of America leads the big bank fraud lawsuit settlement tally. So far, it has racked up the largest settlement, $8.5 billion in June, to settle claims related to $100 billion worth of Countrywide-spun mortgage securities backed by faulty loans. B of A is also being sued by state and federal regulators for questionable foreclosure practices and a union benefits plan for hiding foreclosure problems that impacted its share price.

Bail Outs

To date, B of A has received over $1 trillion in federal assistance. In terms of overall federal subsidies received in the bailout (including TARP), Bank of America was second only to Citigroup ($230 billion compared to $415 billion).

Tax Evasion

Despite being propped up by the government, B of A paid no federal taxes for 2010 or 2009 by making use of its posted pre-tax loss of $5.4 billion. Meanwhile, it actually cited a tax benefit of $1 billion.

We demand Bank of America:

  • Break up into smaller, safer pieces that won’t take America down with them if they fail.
  • Invest in the planet and stop funding coal projects that are polluting our communities and ruining the climate.
  • Pay the statutorily required 35% corporate income tax instead of draining the government of revenue through off-shore tax shelters, loopholes, and scams.
  • Stabilize the housing market and revitalize the economy: reduce principal for all underwater homeowners to current market value. This would end the foreclosure crisis, reset the housing market, pump billions of dollars back into the economy, and create 1 million jobs a year.
  • Invest in small businesses, the main source of jobs in the U.S.
THIS IS A NONVIOLENT DIRECT ACTION.

Youth Empowerment, Leadership and Activism Workshop

[improve]

  • Date: Saturday, March 10, 2012
  • Time: 11am to 4pm
  • Location: Mount Scott Community Center 5530 SE 72nd Ave
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Free youth empowerment, leadership and activism workshop through Portland Parks and Rec

For links and registration, see our website: http://yeacamp.org/?page_id=584

YEA Academy is a free monthly Saturday workshop program for 12-17 year olds who want to make a difference in their community or the world.

At YEA, participants will learn ways to bring about a change on social justice issues they care about, such as:

  • homophobia
  • climate change
  • racism
  • animal rights
  • bullying

Like our flagship program, YEA Camp, YEA Academy’s curriculum is based on four areas we feel are critical for activists to develop: knowledge, skills, confidence and community to take action on the issues that matter to them.

From 11am-4pm one Saturday a month, youth have an opportunity to learn key skills like:

  • running an effective school club
  • fundraising
  • running a campaign
  • and arts activism

All while finding out about inspiring ways others are having an impact in their community, building self confidence, creating a plan to impact a societal problem, and making friends with other young change-makers.

YEA Academy is being run in partnership with Portland Parks and Recreation. Spaces are limited, so please register early.

Please note: you must enter the course codes below to find the “Youth Empowerment” course at the Portland Parks and Rec registration website. https://www.portlandparks.org/register/Start/Start.asp

Solidarity through Companionship: a free training workshop

[improve]

  • Date: Saturday, March 10, 2012
  • Time: noon-2 p.m.
  • Location: OPDX HQ Che Room, 1131 SE Oak St
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Come learn how to engage people into conversation in a non-threatening and welcoming way.

Other details
Based on the "congregational companionship ministry of presence" developed by the Rev. Craig Rennebohm, this training was originally designed for local churches and in mental health chaplaincy setting, but since then has been successfully used with little or no modification even in non-religious settings such as social service agencies and even by a few police departments in helping connect people with services and resources — and even in preventing escalation of aggressive/disturbing behaviors.

In particular, this training benefits those who are introverted or unaccustomed to interacting with people who are from very different background from who they are. The training focuses on building first an authentic human-to-human connection, instead of approaching a person through "frames" and roles one plays. Through a non-confrontational approach, the companionship also facilitates a person to address unwelcome behaviors by others without becoming confrontational and aggressive, and thereby proactively preventing any escalation that may lead to violence.

How to Use the Mainstream Media to Tell Radical Stories: A Workshop

[improve]

We will discuss press announcements, press releases, making pitch calls, framing, strategic messaging and how to otherwise use story strategically in the context of your campaigns and with the mainstream media. Seasoned activists will discuss their recent work organizing mass actions in which the mainstream media carried some of the radical messages of the Occupy Movement.

This is a joint workshop offered by Rising Tide, the Portland Central American Solidarity Committee and the Occupy Portland PR committee!

Chakra Dance

[improve]

  • Date: Every Sunday

  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

Each Sunday a special guest will guide us through a "Chakra Dance."

Among the best tools to evolve the spirit are the energy centers known as chakras. Chakra, an ancient sanskrit term meaning “wheel of light,” describes a complex human energy system of awareness.

The seven chakra centers are associated with specific areas of the physical body. Each chakra is equally important to our energy flow and vitality, and each affects all the others.

Developing one chakra while neglecting others only creates an imbalance, weakening overall strength. The goal is to have all seven chakras open, balanced and integrated.

Remembering Fukushima

[improve]

  • Date: Sunday, March 11, 2012
  • Time: 12:00pm until 2:30pm
  • Location: Pioneer Courthouse Square 701 SW 6th Ave, Portland, OR 97204
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

On the one year anniversary of the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster, we hope you come down with friends, family and all loved ones in remembering this disaster and it's impact on not only the lives lost, but the toll this disaster will have on the future of humanity, and more to the point, our planet Earth.

All are invited as this is a peaceful gathering in remembrance and a chance to discuss changes that can be made to avert such disasters and what we can do to help with educating the public at large about nuclear energy, it's waste, and it's very real impact on our planet.

You are encouraged to bring a flower (sunflowers encouraged), candle, sign, flag, or just yourself. Let's gather together in peaceful solidarity for those affected by this horrendous disaster, after all, it will affect all of us.

“This is the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl. Routine reporting of elevated radiation levels was suspended in the early days of the crisis,” says Dr. Tim Takaro, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University. “Although information about Fukushima is largely absent from our news media, suggesting that the danger is over, we know that efforts to contain the four troubled reactors – at least three of which sustained explosions - continues. Without reliable data regarding the amount of radiation released into seawater and the atmosphere, and the resulting concentrations in our food chain, we are ill-equipped to predict the longterm consequences.”

We cannot just wash it away.

Look forward to seeing you there, thanks!

  • Location: Friends Meeting House, Downstairs 4312 SE Stark, Portland, OR, 97214

Purpose

Dharma Circles invite us to rest in the ease of the present moment.

Frosty leaves as non-dual teachings from the world’s wisdom traditions open into the spacious field of the heart. Reflection, silent sitting, and silent movement soften our boundaries and open awareness of our essential nature, nearer to us than our own breath.

All contemplative practices and levels of experience (or no experience) are welcome.

The door is open at 6:45. At 7:00 pm we begin with dialogue and dharma reflection, followed by an hour of silent practice.

Feel free to bring cushions, mats, or whatever is comfortable for your sitting practice (some cushions and chairs are provided).

Grounded in the heart, our actions grow from deep soil to yield fruits that enhance peace, justice, beauty, and balance in all that we do.

In a tumultuous world, maintaining a spacious heart requires attention, intention, and ever-deepening love.

Sangha or satsang is created anytime we are present with others for reflection or practice in the space of the heart, in service of truth. Sharing that intention, our dialogues invite us into reflection on our deepest Being, Mystery, Emptiness, the Beloved.

Every faith or no faith are equally welcome here.

We embrace human nature just as it is, holy and broken, perfect and imperfect at the same time, and steep together in the timeless present moment, where definitions slip away.

Gathering in satsang, sangha, or a community of practice provides a rich common ground as we travel in the terrain of the Heart.

Purpose

A report from the front line of conservation and sustainability from Binka Le Breton, President and Executive Director of Iracambi Research Center in Brazil.

FREE and open to the public

In the context of last minute efforts to resuscitate and extend the Kyoto Protocol at the COP 17 in Durban, and in preparation for next year’s UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio + 20), what efforts are being made in Brazil and internationally to ensure the future of the last great rainforests?

How reasonable is it to expect Brazil and other rainforest countries to go against the tide of history and preserve their forests in the context of rapid development—more particularly in the cases of Brazil and Indonesia, two members of the BRIIC countries? What are some of the mechanisms by which policy makers at local, regional, and national levels can be encouraged to value and preserve natural resources in the face of conflicting demands for minerals, energy, and food crops?

Binka Le Breton is an award-winning author, environmentalist, and activist who lives in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest where she co-directs the Iracambi Research Center, working with the local community to protect the rainforest and improve rural livelihoods. Iracambi focuses on research and education, GIS, public policy, sustainability, and water and forest monitoring—all in the context of climate change.

Queer (In)Justice: Police Misconduct Attorney Andrea Ritchie Speaks

[improve]

  • Date: Tuesday, March 13, 2012
  • Time: 5:30pm until 6:30pm
  • Location: In Other Words 14 NE Killingsworth, Portland, OR 97217
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

On March 13, the National Lawyers’ Guild presents attorney Andrea Ritchie, speaking about the book she co-authored, Queer (In)justice: The Criminalization of LGBT People in the United States. The event will be held at In Other Words Community Center at 14 NE Killingsworth Street, from 5:30-6:30 pm.

Queer (In)justice is “a groundbreaking work that turns a 'queer eye' on the criminal legal system. In March 2003—three decades after Stonewall—police stormed the Power Plant, a private Detroit club frequented by African American LGBT people. Over 350 people were handcuffed. Some were hit in the head and back; others were slammed into walls while being verbally abused. Their supposed crime was later chalked up to a bizarre infraction 'loitering inside a building.' The event illuminated a long shadow of policing in America, where discrimination and prejudice are pervasive. Drawing on years of research, activism, and legal advocacy, Queer (In)Justice is a searing examination of the queer experience—as criminal defendants, prisoners, and survivors of violent crimes.”

Andrea Ritchie is a police misconduct attorney and organizer who has engaged in extensive research, litigation, and advocacy on profiling, policing, and violence by law enforcement agents against women and LGBT people of color over the past two decades. She currently coordinates Streetwise & Safe (SAS), a leadership development initiative aimed at sharing information, strategies for safety, and visions for change among LGBT youth of color. Her book, Violence Every Day: Racial Profiling and Police Brutality Against Women, Girls and Transgender People of Color, will be published in 2012 by South End Press.

How to Grow All Your Own Produce in 2.5 Years

[improve]

  • Date: Friday, March 16, 2012
  • Time: 6:00pm until 8:00pm
  • Location: King County Library Service Center 960 Newport Way NW, Issaquah, WA
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

In the Maritime Northwest, it is possible to grow all our own produce year-round with limited time to establish a system and limited effort.

As petroleum becomes more expensive, this sort of system can provide an example to support our evolution to a more sustainable society. Marisha Auerbach specializes in converting properties from grass to to a perennial forage system.

A perennial forage system functions much like a natural ecological system, and yields year round produce with minimal work. These systems are developed to meet the needs of the inhabitants on site.

Marisha provides most of her diet and income from her garden and has surplus produce and crafts to give away and trade for other supplies.

This presentation is an invitation for you to visit Marisha's gardens through slides and lecture. She will be discussing how you can work towards self-reliance in produce if you have property to work with as well as guerrilla tactics to grow more food and flowers in the greater community. This lecture offers an opportunity to create cultural change through gardening.

The slideshow will be an updated version, including Marisha's experience and reflections on moving to Portland this year in mid-June and her tiny yard. We hope you can join us...

A GLOBAL DAY Of Action Shut Down MONSANTO ! European movement

[improve]

  • Date: March 16 until March 17
  • Time: 7:00 AM
  • Location: Any and Every Monsanto facility in the world
  • Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.

Purpose

MONSANTO is one of the leading concerns in agricultural industry.
  • It's a leading producer of ROUND UP (glyphosate), which was proven to cause birth defects on some animals even in dilutions much lower than those used in agriculture.
  • Many of the seeds produced by the company are genetically modified to be RESISTANT TO CHEMICALS like Round Up. Eating products grown from them has been proven to have adverse effects on health.
  • The other controversy is TERMINATORS technology patented by one of the companies in Monsanto group. It allows to produce STERILE SEEDS which grow into plants that don't flower and grow seeds. It forces farmers to purchase new seeds each year, instead of growing their own and makes them totally DEPENDENT ON THE SUPPLIER. This caused many protests all over the World and it is a practice against natural rights!
  • Another controversy around Monsanto was introducing SYNTHETIC GROWTH HORMONE, known as "recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone" - hormone injected to cows to INCREASE MILK PRODUCTION. This hormone is present in milk and linked to many adverse effects like CANCER ACCELERATION.
  • The concern is responsible for pollution in different parts of the World, like dumping toxic waste in the UK (1965 - 1972), etc.
  • Moreover! Monsanto was also a producer of AGENT ORANGE - a herbicide and defoliant used by USA in Vietnam war. It was used to destroy crops and forests in many parts of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia (1962-71) and caused devastating effects on people's health like cancers, terrible birth defects, stillbirths and miscarriages, etc. These chemicals are still present in the soil.
  • Monsanto employs children in cotton-seeds manufacture in India. Work includes carrying of poisonous pesticides. Those children get less than half dollar daily for their work.

Europe resists genetically modified foods

EU legislation of 2003 demanded strict rules on labeling, traceability and risk assessments of GM foods by all the biotech companies. The 2004 regulation laid down procedures on traceability and labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and all products produced using GMOs. The mandatory labeling legislation extends its requirement to all food and food ingredients produced from GMOs regardless of the detectable presence of DNA or protein within the final food product. (source - Wikipedia)

Let's help to shut the poisoner down and bring it to justice!

UNITE WITH WORLDWIDE PROTESTS against the crimes of this corporation with one objective

to educate Consumers, Farmers - and Monsanto... that we are not ignorant, and we will Not accept GMO Control of Food. Consumers need to know what they are eating, and the disaster Export Farming and Control of Seeds has caused in the 3rd World, disguised as philanthropy. Millions are dying. Indigenous lands are destroyed, poverty and hunger has increased. the fight in Europe is well underway, with resistance in Poland, Hungary, France and England support street movements in Africa, Asia and Latin America

TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A REAL STAND!!!!!!!

POLISH

Praca obejmuje m.in. noszenie trujących pestycydów. Dzieci te zarabiaja mniej niż poł dolara dziennie.

Europa sprzeciwia sie genetycznie zmodyfikowanej żywności:

Prawo UE ( 2003 r.) zawiera ścisłe przepisy dotyczące etykietowania, identyfikowania i oceny ryzyka genetycznie modyfikowanej zywnosci przez wszystkie firmy. W 2004 r. ustanowiono procedury dotyczące możliwości śledzenia i etykietowania organizmów zmodyfikowanych genetycznie (GMO) i wszystkich produktow wytwarzanych z wykorzystaniem GMO.

Nasz cel: Edukacja konsumentów, rolnikow i przedstawicieli Monsanto... Nie bedziemy ignorantami! Konsumenci muszą wiedzieć co jedza, miec swiadomosc klęsk ekologicznych i Kontroli Eksportu nasion w krajach III świata. Miliony umierają. Nastepuje degradacja srodowiska.

Polska, Wegry, Francja, Wlk Brytania a takze niektore kraje afrykanskie, azjatyckie oraz kraje Ameryki Lacinskiej juz lacza sie w sprzeciwie.
