Make Civilian Oversight Part of Portland's Charter!
[improve]
- Date: Monday, January 9, 2012
- Time: 6PM - 8PM
- Location: Rose Room, 3rd Floor, Portland City Hall 1221 SW 4th Avenue
- Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.
Purpose
Change Portland's Charter so The People have meaningful oversight over police conduct.
What are your ideas? Two ideas are gaining traction:
- The CRC should be provided legal representation other than the City Attorney, who has a responsibility to prevent the city from exposure to lawsuits: this duty conflicts with uncovering misconduct.
- Eliminate police horses. Perhaps we could get animal rights people to join those of us who were pushed about by these workhorses and into tear-gassers barricading the street. If the city was concerned by infestations in the Occupy Portland camp, then they will be incensed to learn about the rats down by the horse barn!
Bring words you think should go into the City Charter. Bring your friends. Bring us change!
We need to demand structured change. Once we get this document amended, we can begin work on the U.S. Constitution!
For more information, contact Portland Copwatch.

Dharma Circle
[improve]
- Date: Mondays
- Time: 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
- Location: Friends Meeting House, Downstairs 4312 SE Stark, Portland, OR, 97214
- Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.
Purpose
- Dharma Circles invite us to rest in the ease of the present moment.
Frosty leaves as non-dual teachings from the world’s wisdom traditions open into the spacious field of the heart. Reflection, silent sitting, and silent movement soften our boundaries and open awareness of our essential nature, nearer to us than our own breath.
- All contemplative practices and levels of experience (or no experience) are welcome.
The door is open at 6:45. At 7:00 pm we begin with dialogue and dharma reflection, followed by an hour of silent practice.
- Feel free to bring cushions, mats, or whatever is comfortable for your sitting practice (some cushions and chairs are provided).
Grounded in the heart, our actions grow from deep soil to yield fruits that enhance peace, justice, beauty, and balance in all that we do.
In a tumultuous world, maintaining a spacious heart requires attention, intention, and ever-deepening love.
Sangha or satsang is created anytime we are present with others for reflection or practice in the space of the heart, in service of truth. Sharing that intention, our dialogues invite us into reflection on our deepest Being, Mystery, Emptiness, the Beloved.
- Every faith or no faith are equally welcome here.
We embrace human nature just as it is, holy and broken, perfect and imperfect at the same time, and steep together in the timeless present moment, where definitions slip away.
Gathering in satsang, sangha, or a community of practice provides a rich common ground as we travel in the terrain of the Heart.

Captive Genders book launch in Portland
[improve]
- Date: Wednesday, January 11, 2012
- Time: 7:00pm until 10:00pm
- Location: Red and Black Cafe 400 SE 12th Ave, Portland, OR 97214
- Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.
Purpose
Join Eric A. Stanley, Ralowe T. Ampu and Toshio Meronek for a book launch and reading of Captive Genders.
Pathologized, terrorized, and confined, trans/gender non-conforming and queer folks have always struggled against the enormity of the prison industrial complex. The first collection of its kind, Eric A. Stanley and Nat Smith bring together current and former prisoners, activists, and academics to offer new ways for understanding how race, gender, ability, and sexuality are lived under the crushing weight of captivity. Through a politic of gender self-determination, this collection argues that trans/queer liberation and prison abolition must be grown together. From rioting against police violence and critiquing hate crimes legislation to prisoners demanding access to HIV medications, and far beyond, Captive Gender is a challenge for us all to join the struggle.
"new frameworks and new vocabularies that surely will have a transformative impact on the theories and practices of twenty-first century abolition."
—Angela Y. Davis

Purpose
- The Portland City Council's "Upcoming Agenda Items" now lists the "War Dollars Home" resolution on the agenda for Thursday, January 12, at 2 PM.
Peace & Justice Works is coordinating the growing number of partner organizations to line up some heavy-hitting testimony to support this important call for ending the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan and redirecting this war-spending to creating much-needed jobs, rebuilding infrastructure and funding human needs here at home.
The City Council hearing will also include two other important resolutions from the Mayor's office:

Also, if you'd like to get some ideas for what you might say at the hearing, check out "How Do We End the War in Afghanistan?", a presentation by Matthew Hoh and Zaher Wahab from last June.

Join our community protest against 7 Eleven building it's third store in our neighborhood. The purposed site is two blocks away from our local St. Johns Deli and Grocery store that has been apart of our area since 1979.
We want to draw attention to what we view as a move to push out competing locally owned convenience stores. St. Johns is our home and we want our neighbors' businesses to thrive instead of seeing their doors close due to a take over from Corporate franchises.
We will take to the site where 7 Eleven hopes to build with signs and our voices. This is a non-violent protest all are welcome.

Rally to allow Gresham BMXers to use Gresham Skate Park
[improve]
- Date: Sun, January 15
- Time: 12pm – 4pm
- Location: Gresham Skate Park 219 S Main
- Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.
Purpose
- Let's show some solidarity with our sisters and brothers in Gresham.
Occupy Gresham is hosting the Gresham BMX Bike Group as well as the PDX Bike Swarm in a rally to support the right for BMX bikers to use the Gresham Skate Park (GSP). The group will meet at the GSP at 12PM on Sunday, January 15th and will rally until 4PM. The event is family friendly. There is currently an ordinance in Gresham that prohibits bicycles and scooters at the GSP. The police are under a Mayoral mandate to cite riders and confiscate all bikes that enter the park. The BMX bikers and their parents have started a grassroots movement to repeal the ordinance. They have gathered petitions and met multiple times with the City Council, but have faced repeated rebuttals. The skateboard community supports sharing the park with the BMX bikers. Nearly every other park in the state allows bicyclists and skaters to ride together in harmony. All parties involved in this event believe there is no valid reason for the current ordinance.
- Follow the swarm blog for updates. http://www.PDXbikeswarm.org
We need bodies to show up so spread the word!

Occupy Martin Luther King Junior Day
[improve]
- Date: Monday 16 January 2012
- Location: TBA
- Jump to this event's wiki page, edit it, discuss it or return to the events page.
Purpose
- Re-Occupy Public Space
- A Modest Proposal for a Coordinated Effort in Honor of MLK Day
January’s economic news and reality will dramatize the continued need for our occupations. Let’s continue to talk and introduce some of these ideas at the next General Assembly:
- Organize a campaign of Re-Occupation during the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, arriving first with paintings and other “images” of tents to challenge the logic of restrictions against tents, in addition to all other types of culture-jamming actions.
- Continue the global dialogue seeking a transition from the current failed political and economic system to a post-capitalist “real” democratic future.
- Strengthen inter-occupation communication of ideas, solutions, and calls for global days of action.
- Consider adopting some simple guidelines such as a dedication to nonviolence, that the food is free for everyone without restriction, that decisions will be make by consensus at the General Assembly, and that drugs and alcohol are not to be consumed at the occupation.
- Encourage local officials to end their efforts to drive the occupations and tents off public space with petitions, meetings, participation in public hearings, and all other nonviolent actions. Remind city officials that the UN and other international organizations support our right to continue these very important occupations.
