Places to go near Portland Long Beach, Washington: Convenient Portland getaway and home to the "world's largest frying pan." Visit beautiful Timberline Lodge, a National Historic Landmark. The lodge was constructed in the late '30s as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project during the Great Depression. Ski the slippery slopes of Mt. Hood. Explore the active volcano at Mt.
